Mike Childs, Friends of the Earth’s Head of Science, Policy & Research

Day 1: Mike Childs has worked for 30 years for the organisation on issues including factory pollution, waste management, chemical safety, and climate change. He led the organisation’s Big Ask Campaign between 2004 to 2008 which led to the passing of the Climate Change Act. Over the last two years he has worked with the consultancy Transport for Quality of Life to identify what national and local changes are needed to reduce transport’s carbon emissions to level’s consistent with the UK’s international climate obligations.

Day 4: Be inspired by Alexandra. We discuss In Black and White, the lack of diversity in the legal sector and what lessons can be learned for the highways and transportation sector.

Richard Newman, Company Founder & Director, Body Talk

Richard’s team at Body Talk helped one engineering company win over £1.2 billion in new government contracts in 1 year by improving the way they present, winning 100% of the work they bid for.

He is regularly featured on BBC London Radio, discussing the communication styles of leaders. He has also been featured on SKY TV, in the Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and Forbes Magazine.

In 2014 Richard won the most coveted award in speechwriting, the Cicero Grand Prize Award for Best Speechwriter.

 

   

Ros Taylor, CEO, RTC Leadership & Coaching

Day 4: Ros Taylor is a leading UK and international psychologist, executive coach, successful businesswoman, an accomplished author and a TV and radio presenter.

Ros broadcasts regularly on Radio and television. She presented a Social Science research programme ‘Between Ourselves’ for BBC Radio Scotland for two years. She was also a presenter for five years on a nightly television news programme. Other TV and Radio work includes BBC radio and television, Scottish Television, GMTV, LWT, ITN News, Sky News, and Channel 4.

Ros now has a team of consultants that she has trained to deliver her Just Leadership® courses and One2One Executive® Coaching programme. In 2009, she launched Corporate Coach International®. Her consultants now deliver leadership programmes in 37 countries and on 4 continents, most notably the Women as Leaders Programme.

   

Kelly Demyan, People Consulting Director, Ernst & Young

Day 3: Kelly Demyan is a people consulting director and part of EY’s transport leadership team. She specialises in digital transformation in the sector, helping companies such as Highways England, DfT and Network Rail realise value from information, technology and innovation. As we navigate accelerated change, Kelly believes that we can only move forward if we place humans at the centre of the mobility agenda. She is passionate about driving a step-change in how companies prepare for and embrace digital disruption and believes that investing in young people and their careers is critical for companies to achieve a competitive advantage.

   

Kiran Savjani, Strategy Consulting Director, EY-Parthenon

Day 3: Kiran Savjani is a strategy consulting director in EY-Parthenon and part of EY’s Future of Mobility leadership team.  Kiran has 15 years’ experience in business strategy and business model innovation across multiple sectors.  Kiran has advised start-ups through to global corporations on mobility topics, from conceptualising new business ideas through to commercialising new technologies and scaling proven mobility models into new markets.  Kiran holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Engineering from the University of Cambridge.

   

Professor Carlos Moreno Associate Professor at the Paris IAE - Panthéon Sorbonne University in France

Day 2: An Interview with Professor Carlos Moreno – Author of the 15-Minute City

Researcher of international renown, Carlos Moreno is Associate Professor at the Paris IAE - Panthéon Sorbonne University in France, and also co-founder and scientific director of the ETI Chair « Entrepreneurship – Territory - Innovation ». He is specialized in the study of complex systems and in the development of innovation processes.

   

Alex Dawn: Alex is a leader in Analytics, Data analysis and Evidence for Sustainable Transport. He is a data spatial visualisation representation specialist (ArcGIS, QGIS) with extensive experience translating raw data into land use and transport visualisations. This includes evidencing sustainable transport strategies and LCWIPs, across the UK.

   

Elliot Reid: Elliot is a transport and spatial planner specialist with particular experience in transport strategy and transport appraisal studies including leading Transport Assessments for a variety of development sites across the UK.

  

Dagmara Stachelek - Dagmara is a Graduate Consultant at AECOM, based in Newcastle upon Tyne. She obtained an MSc in Transport Planning and Engineering in 2018.  Dagmara is the current YP Chair for the CIHT North East & Cumbria committee.

   

Ben Pollard - Ben is a Graduate Transport Planner at Milestone Transport Planning, based in Gateshead. He obtained an MSc in Transport Planning and Intelligent Transport Systems at Newcastle University in 2018. His main area of work includes the preparation of Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, Environmental Statements, Road Safety Audit Briefs and Designers Responses to support planning applications, supported by other tasks including micro-simulation modelling and AutoCAD work.

   

Emma Scott – Emma is a graduate transport planner working for Jacobs in their Newcastle Upon Tyne office. Emma started her career at Jacobs in 2019 having graduated from Newcastle University with an undergraduate degree in Geography and postgraduate degree in Transport Planning and Engineering. She is an active member of Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation, having recently presented at the North East and Cumbria CIHT Young Professionals Paper Evening with her paper on autonomous vehicles and the role they play in the everyday lives of young people and their associated mobility patterns. Her main transport interests stem from her Human Geography academic background, especially the ‘hidden’ social and cultural aspects that underpin transportation

   

Erin Ruddy - Erin is a civil engineering degree apprentice working at Arup Newcastle. Erin has recently obtained her EngTech status with the CIHT back in January 2020 and is currently in her first year of studying civil engineering at Leeds Beckett University. As an active CIHT committee member Erin has took part in a range of different CIHT activities such as judging the AOTY awards 2019, attending the Young Professionals conference three years in a row and regularly attending seminars, social events and regional committee meetings. Erin’s main interests within the industry are highways design and getting involved in STEM programmes.

    

Dr. John McCarthy - John is the Global lead for the Shared, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles activity within Arup and leads the European Intelligent Mobility business. Arup is a global Engineering Consultancy firm of close to 13,000 employees with offices located in every continent. John has led the first ever Autonomous vehicle trial in the UK and has provided critical input to the Autodrive Connected and Autonomous project recently concluded in the UK. John was an expert witness to the House of Lords on the subject of Automated vehicles and has recently been a steering group member for British Standard’s Institute (BSI’s) Development of the Operational Design Domain Standards and PAS for Connected/Autonomous vehicles.

    

Adam Cane - Educated as a Civil Engineer BSc (Hons), Adam began his career working as a highways and bridge engineer for a local council, giving him hands-on experience. In his four years at ACO, he has enjoyed a highly technical role supporting engineers on high-level projects. He now uses that knowledge supporting engineers on schemes and providing professional development presentations. In his spare time Adam works to promote, construct and educate on the subject of Renewable Energy and Sustainability and enjoys attending festivals and exercising.

    

Terry Wilkinson - As a Highways Application Engineer for ACO, Terry has focused his career on the highways industry, both in his five years at ACO and prior to this, as a consultant and contractor in the industry. He is a member of the CIHT and is working towards his chartered engineer status with CPD at the heart of this journey. Unsurprisingly, his professional interests are focused on highways drainage solutions; however, he has a broader understanding of applications for other areas such as housing, commercial and distribution developments.

   

Blayne Cahill - Blayne is an experienced recruitment leader with a passion for staff engagement and development. As Director of the highways, transport & infrastructure contract division of Carrington West, Blayne leads four highly experienced and specialist teams with an exceptional reputation for designing and delivering resourcing solutions for clients in the public and private sectors.

With a genuine interest in the industry and relationships that span over a decade within the highways sector, Blayne is considered a true expert in his field. Blayne is an MREC Cert RP and holds a Politics degree from the University of Southampton.

   

James Fernandes - James is the Managing Director and co-founder of Carrington West where he is responsible for implementing the vision for the business, the development of the management team and driving growth. James is a passionate recruitment leader whose driving force is to create an outstanding working environment where all employees are able to progress in their careers, be healthy and happy at work and deliver best in class recruitment services to clients and candidates.

Prior to co-founding Carrington West, James gained experience as an international technical recruiter working in the highways and transport sector. He started as a trainee consultant before being promoted 3 times within 7 years to hold leadership roles. James is an MREC Cert RP, holds a BSc in Engineering & Business Management from the University of Greenwich.

   

Baroness Brown of Cambridge - Baroness Brown is an engineer and a Crossbench Member of the House of Lords, who has held senior roles in industry and academia.  In eight years at Rolls-Royce her positions included Director of Advanced Engineering for the Industrial Businesses and Director of Engineering and Technology for the Marine Business. She was an academic at Cambridge for sixteen years, and Vice-Chancellor of Aston University from 2006 – 20016.

She is currently: Vice Chair of the Committee on Climate Change and Chair of the Adaptation Committee; NED of the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult; Chair of the Carbon Trust.  She was non-executive director of the Green Investment Bank and led the King Review on decarbonising transport (2008) for the Chancellor of the Exchequer.  She is the Sector Champion for the Offshore Wind Sector Deal.

   

George Gillespie - Building on a PhD from Queen’s University, Belfast for research into low emission engines, Dr Gillespie has over 30 years international experience in the automotive industry.  He joined MIRA in 2009 as CEO and in 2015 he led the sale of MIRA to HORIBA Japan.  He is now President of HORIBA’s automotive division and a Senior Corporate Officer of HORIBA Ltd, Japan.  He is currently President of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and previously chaired the Intelligent Connected Vehicles Group within the UK Automotive Council from 2014 to 2018 and is a member of the WEF Global Autonomous Urban Mobility Council.  He has previously served as a Board Member of both the Coventry & Warwickshire LEP and the Leicestershire LEPs.

    

Dean Kerwick-Chrisp - Team leader Sustainable development & design, and principal environmental advisor

Dean is a former landscape architect who has amassed over 28 years highway experience with Highways England and its predecessors. After mastering in environmental economics he led transport policy on environmental assessment and appraisal. Since 2008 he has been regarded nationally and internationally in the fields of sustainable development and climate. For more than a decade he’s promoted carbon measurement and change within highway design and construction developing the Highways England carbon tool. He’s been responsible for two previous adaptation reporting power assessments and is now engaged on the company’s next climate risk assessment. Dean has co-authored Conference of European Director’s of Roads (CEDR) climate mitigation and adaptation reports and chaired CEDR research programmes. He is currently chair of CIRIA Environment Panel.

   

Richard Hernan - Richard is a Principal Engineer with over 12 years’ experience across both Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering disciplines. He is an experienced Road Safety Auditor and a serving committee member for the Society of Road Safety Auditors. 

   

Jonathan Spear - Jonathan has 25 years’ experience in transport and public policy, strategy, governance and regulatory studies, capacity and skills analysis and building. Much of this has specialized in national, regional and local transport policy frameworks, institutional structures and processes. He has worked extensively in the international arena, including the UK, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific, and been based in London, Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Much of Jonathan’s work has included identifying international good practice in transport planning and delivery, benchmarking national or regional performance and making lessons more widely transferable. In this context, he is increasingly interested in the policy and regulatory implications of new transport technologies and service models, how this enables future market adoption and how new approaches may be applied to countries at different stages of development.   

   

Nicola Blaney 

Nicola is a Chartered Engineer, with over 12 years’ experience in highway design, transport planning, major events planning and asset management. In 2019, she transitioned from private consultancy to public sector and currently holds a position within Transport Scotland’s Roads Directorate. 

Nicola was elected to the Scottish Southern and Central branch committee in 2014 and initially assisted with the development of the events programme. After the consolidation of the Institution’s UK branches to regions, in May 2015, Nicola took up the position of Honorary Secretary for the Scotland Region. In 2018, Nicola was awarded with the Institution’s Young Professional of the Year title and as a result was nominated to CIHT Council, with a two-year tenure. She is also a Trustee of the CIHT Board. Nicola was elected Vice Chair of the Scotland Region in 2019 and is responsible for its strategic direction (in line with the Corporate Plan), goal setting and event delivery in order to support the needs of the Scottish membership. 

   

Chris Shipway - Chris is a Senior Transport Planner specialising in traffic modelling and economic appraisal and has been working at Jacobs for over five years. In 2014, Chris graduated from the University of Exeter with his degree in Mathematics.

Chris has been an active member of the CIHT since being a graduate himself, starting off as Chair of the CIHT South West Exeter Young Members Group. For two years Chris was the Events and Communications Officer for the region, coordinating events across the South West. As Vice Chair in 2019 Chris was responsible for organising the successful South West Conference and Dinner.

   

Ron Calderwood-Duncan - Ron is Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and Employee Engagement at Highways England. As part of the HR Leadership team, and wider Senior Leadership Team across HE, Ron is responsible for the strategies and direction of the EDI agenda for over 5,900 employees. Before this role, Ron has spent over 15 years in the HR industry building an extensive knowledge of evidenced based and results driven people activities.
Through personal experience as a member of the LGBT+ community and roles such as HR Manager for London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games he has acquired a firm belief that everyone should be able to bring their whole selves to work in a fully inclusive environment, to realise their full potential, and for the success of the business.

Recently launching ‘Who We Are’, a collaborative campaign and platform that focuses on individuality, will further build upon his commitment to ensuring employees are treated equally and with equity for development and growth at Highways England as an inclusive employer.

   

Adam Simmons - Adam is Director of Future Road Investment Strategies and Government Relations at Highways England. He is responsible for producing the evidence and plans to support Highways England’s programme of work for our motorways and A-roads for 2020-2025 (Road Period 2). This includes Highways England’s SRN Initial Report, Strategic Business Plan and Delivery Plan as well as other evidence and advice to government. Adam is also leading Highways England’s work to prepare for Road Period 3 (2025-2030). Adam has been a senior leader in public sector transport for over 15 years.

   

John Hall - John is the Professional Development Officer at CIHT.

John has held positions in the Education and Professional Development departments at two Professional Engineering Institutions. He has developed and managed Initial and Professional Development Frameworks for nearly 3 years. John is now leading on the development of CIHT’s Framework as well as managing CIHT’s CPD and Apprenticeship End Point Assessment Programs.
