Become a mentor with CIHT

Mentoring is a semi-structured process by which experienced individuals share own their knowledge, skills and experience to help others to achieve their professional and/or personal development goals. As an example, a mentor can support their mentee to identify any gaps in their knowledge and experience, so they can plan appropriate professional development activities to meet the relevant competence requirements of the professional qualification they are aiming to achieve.

CIHT Mentoring

CIHT Mentoring is available to CIHT members who are currently working towards Engineering Council or Chartered Transport Planning Professional registration

CIHT mentors provide advice, guidance and encouragement to their mentee on their journey to becoming professionally qualified. As a mentor, you will help the mentee identify the relevant knowledge, skills and experience required tmeet the relevant competence requirements of the professional qualification they are aiming to achieve and advise on how this might be demonstrated in their mentees submission and at the professional review interview.

Please see the Professional Qualifications Mentoring Guides below for for more information on mentoring with CIHT.

Benefits of Becoming a Mentor

Mentoring can be an incredibly rewarding experience and mentors can derive a great deal of satisfaction from contributing to the success of others. Mentors get to give something back to the highways and transportation sector and accelerate their own learning and development while building collaborative relationships. Mentoring counts as a CPD activity for CIHT members. Other benefits include:

  • Opportunities to demonstrate a commitment to developing people
  • Personal satisfaction of guiding and sharing with another CIHT Member
  • Opportunity to use and develop leadership skills

Professional Qualifications Mentoring Guides

As a CIHT mentor you will work with your mentees and guide them through the process of applying for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer, Engineering Technician or Chartered Transport Planning Professional. CIHT have created guidance notes to provide information and best practice guidance to CIHT Members who have (or wish to) volunteered to act as mentors for those planning to apply for professional registration.
