Transport is by far the largest source of energy-related CO2 emissions in Ireland. In 2017 it was responsible for 39%. It is also the sector where CO2 emissions are growing the fastest which makes it vital that the Irish government has an ambitious policy on sustainable mobility and delivers on it.
The review work by The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport arises from a commitment in the Programme for a Partnership Government to review public transport policy 'to ensure services are sustainable into the future and are meeting the needs of a modern economy'.
CIHT welcomes members' views to the consultation on republicofireland@ciht.org.uk.
The public consultation is designed to give stakeholders, interested parties and the general public the opportunity to reflect on the information and analysis in the papers, to share their views, and to contribute to the development of a Sustainable Mobility Policy Statement.
CIHT has this year launched our Climate Change Pledge setting out the six pledges that CIHT as an organisation will commit to, including promoting the need for investment and implementation of sustainable development. In August CIHT published the advice Better Planning, Better Transport, Better Places setting out the importance of integrating planning and transport to create sustainable developments.
The consultation and background papers are available here.
