About the Webinar

National Inclusion Week is led by Inclusive Employers and this year’s theme is ‘Take Action Make Impact’ – a call to action for all highways and transportation professionals, from leaders, to teams and individuals across roles and areas of professional expertise.

CIHT are bringing together industry experts to discuss whether we as a sector are doing enough on equality, diversity and inclusion in the public space as we are in the workplace. As we work to shift the dial on ED&I, we discuss taking meaningful action beyond diverse representation in the workplace and focussing also on professional practice, from affordable, accessible and safe transport, to how a diverse workforce transforms culture and the spaces and services we provide for the diverse communities we serve.

Key themes

During the webinar some key themes, challenges and perspectives were identified, including:

Transport related social exclusion in the North

“the great risk is those most vulnerable to being excluded by transport are at greater risk of being left even further behind”

“we need to rediscover our focus, about people, places in which those people live, work and play”

“we need to get a diverse profession, but absolutely, every single one of us has an obligation as a professional to use the information available to us, to use the data and to understand dynamics and diversity of our communities”

“we often go out with a solution. How often do we go out and actually engage a community in saying, what’s your thinking about your future for your place?”

Every journey matters

“the infrastructure that we design…the temporary environment is the hardest to change the culture…to promote every journey matters”

“we need to consider the most vulnerable that might be impacted by what we do, who can often be invisible”

“It’s about bringing equity to the table, about how we design”

“all-inclusive planning – it looks good on paper. Being more interactive and not relying on technology…it’s going out before starting works and meeting that community

Applying workplace EDI to professional practice

“Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (ED&I) is part of our job and we weave it into everything we do, rather than it being a bolt-on”

“it’s not just about the metrics on paper, it’s about how people feel”

“it’s not good enough to say that the designers do that for us, and we can’t influence that”

“cost shouldn’t be a barrier to SMEs and often they can be more agile, they’re actually doing a lot more than they realise…there are a lot of resources and free tools out there”
