Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) for First-/Last-Mile Connectivity Technical Talk

A technical talk was organised by The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) Malaysian Branch 2019 (CIHTMB 2019). The talk was held on 8 June 2023 at Banquet Hall, Persada PLUS, Persimpangan Bertingkat Subang, KM15, Lebuhraya Baru Lembah Klang, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan.

This technical talk was organised by the CIHTMB 2019 Technical Talk Committee in conjunction with the CIHTMB 2019’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2023. CIHTMB 2019 wishes to express our gratitude to the Technical Talk Committee Chairman, Datuk Ir. Dr. Leong Siew Mun for organising the talk.

This talk was presented by Mr. Ramachandran Muniandy. He is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Asia Mobiliti, a digital city and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) technology startup enabling intelligent mobility for the developing world.

Mr. Ramachandran described the concept of DRT and its potential to revolutionize transportation systems, particularly for first mile/ last mile connectivity in Malaysia. He began the talk by providing an overview of the existing challenges faced by commuters in accessing public transportation systems especially when it comes to reaching their final destination from transit hubs. Mr. Ramachandran also highlighted the limitations of traditional fixed route systems that hinder seamless connectivity.

The DRT concept leverages technology, data analytics and dynamic routing algorithms to optimize transportation efficiency. Mr. Ramachandran explained that DRT systems allow passengers to request rides on demand through mobile applications or other digital platforms, which enables personalized and flexible travel options. It was discussed how DRT can adapt to the specific needs of Malaysia’s urban landscape by taking into account factors such as population density, traffic patterns and existing infrastructure.

Mr. Ramachandran concluded the talk by sharing insights from Malaysia’s first DRT service which was launched by Asia Mobiliti in March 2023. A total of 68 participants attended on the day. Among those who attended the talk were representatives from Prasarana, Highway Concessionaires, Consulting Companies and Contractors. Two (2) CPD points were applied by CIHTMB 2019 to the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) to be awarded for this talk.
