CIHT Major Project Award

Winner & Overall Winner of the CIHT Awards 2019

Belfast Rapid Transit

Department for Infrastructure, Amey

The £90m Belfast Rapid Transit (BRT) project created a new sustainable public transport system and service in order to enable future growth as envisioned in Belfast City Council’s 2035 “Belfast Agenda”. BRT was delivered within budget and on time in September 2018 by a multi-disciplinary team led by the Department for Infrastructure. Patronage has increased since successful launch by 45,000 passengers per week an increase of around 30% when compared to 2017/18.

The service operates with a fleet of 32 modern tram-like, eco-hybrid ‘Glider’ vehicles which provide a contemporary environment for passengers in terms of space, security and on-board information. The 26 kilometre BRT network benefits from extensive dedicated 12-hour bus lanes, traffic signal upgrades and priority along the routes.  The system also incorporates 102 high quality halts with improved access to the glider vehicles for those with disabilities and older people, real-time information for easier journey planning and a new off-vehicle ticketing system to speed up the boarding process.

Designed and constructed by KierWSP and Balfour Beatty for Northamptonshire County Council the A45 Daventry Development Link (DDL) is a new 3.5 mile (5.7km) single carriageway.

It runs parallel with the M1 from junction 16 and incorporates significant structures crossing the Grand Union Canal, the West Coast Mainline, and the A5 before re-joining the old road.

A45 Daventry Development Link Road Northamptonshire

Northamptonshire County Council, KierWSP and Balfour Beatty

The construction of DDL has improved transport links between the towns of Northampton and Daventry, and access between Daventry and the M1 motorway. The road has relieved the villages of Flore and Weedon of through traffic and will facilitate and support the growth of Daventry District.

Not only does the new road improve transport links but also it helps unlocks the planned housing growth in the Daventry area.
Most importantly, the people in nearby villages are benefitting from the reduction in traffic, particularly the removal of heavy goods vehicles. Communities are now safer and healthier and their quality of life has dramatically improved.

It was delivered by Northamptonshire County Council using the award-winning Northamptonshire Revolving Infrastructure Fund. This combines different funding streams, including SEMLEP Local Growth Fund, County Council funding, developer contributions and Community Infrastructure Levy receipts from Daventry District Council.

Griffiths in partnership with Welsh Government were responsible for the design and build of the £102M A483/A489 Newtown Bypass. The bypass will ease congestion along both trunk roads that converge in the centre of Newtown. There was also an issue with 2 low railway bridges within Newtown which caused regular traffic problems.

A483/A489 Newtown Bypass

Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, Welsh Government, Atkins, Corderoy, Capita, TACP

The bypass consists of

  • 6.5km of new 2+1 bypass, 1km of new side roads
  • 5 new roundabouts
  • 11 structures, 4 underpasses, 4 underbridges (1 railway crossing, 1 80m long, 3 span structure) and 3 overbridges.
  • 2.5M tonnes of earthworks and extensive ground improvement works
  • 7 new attenuation ponds
  • Extensive environmental landscaping works

Challenges Faced:
Griffiths were commissioned for the early Contractor Involvement contract along with our project partners Atkins (Design Development) and TACP (Environmental Support) to develop the scheme from preferred route, through outline design, public consultation, Statutory processes, detailed design, construction and aftercare. During the outline design process, the preferred route was realigned to minimise significant stats diversions and also to pass over the railway rather than under it. Other difficulties included difficult ground conditions and topography, lack of access along whole site, and the interface with existing road network. The scheme has been completed 4 months early.

A19/A194 Lindisfarne Scheme

South Tyneside Council, AECOM, Galliford Try

  • A third lane (east and west bound) on the A194;
  • Full signalisation, connectivity and optimisation of the A194 Roundabout;
  • Installed an attenuation tank- preventing localised flooding, and;
  • Provided a basis for ongoing highways and housing development.

Most importantly Galliford Try, the main delivery partner booked over 100,000 hours of working time from all individuals working on this project and recorded no accidents or injuries. This demonstrates an excellent record from all parties associated with the construction and delivery of this project.

After receiving positive result following a post scheme evaluation, this project now forms the basis of the Strategic Western Gateway that includes the A185/A194 (Arches) completed in March 2019 and the A185 as part of the Transforming Cities Fund. With a combined total of over £20million these schemes which started and connect to the A19/A194 Lindisfarne Junction will ensure that South Tyneside continues to be an excellent place to invest and bring up families.

Barking Riverside is one of the largest new housing developments in the UK and supports the Government’s affordable housing agenda and the London Plan as London’s largest brownfield regeneration project.

The Drovers Road Project required the construction of a new spine road and associated works to link to the existing road network and open up Barking Riverside for further development.

Drovers Road

Eurovia, Ringway Jacobs, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, Barking Riverside Ltd

Drovers Road has unlocked the delivery of over 1200 new homes, 10,000m2 of commercial, retail and leisure development that is anticipated will create 517 FTE jobs. Over 24,000m2 of new school space providing circa 2600 school places across nursery, primary and secondary schools with a further 400 jobs associated with the schools.

The project team formed an integrated site team to deliver the works. The collaborative team operated from co-located offices within the site compound, allowing for quick and easy communication to affect the smooth delivery of the contract.

Eurovia utilised in-house resources and key supply chain partners to deliver the works. This ensured we were able to deliver the efficiencies and consistency of in-house delivery whilst calling on industry specialists for specific elements of the work.
