Waltham Forest School Streets

School Streets are an initiative to improve air quality, make it easier and safer for residents to walk and cycle to school, and create a safer more pleasant environment. Restricting traffic movements around the school leads to improvements in road safety, reductions in antisocial behaviour from inconsiderate parking and dangerous manoeuvres, improved air quality due to reduced vehicle engine idling, and subsequently, more active and healthier lifestyles for the school community, residents and local businesses. Waltham Forest Council has introduced 15 Schools Streets so far with 64 roads included in School Street zones and over 12,000 pupils benefiting!

COVID-19 recovery in a train station

ONHYS helped a city official to re-open a train station in the context of COVID-19.

The use of ONHYS simulation software enabled this client to identify the impact of their existing procedures on the contamination rate directly in a digital twin with various metrics such as density, pedestrian flows, or waiting times.

It allowed this client to identify alternative scenarios and determine the best operating conditions to resume activities while providing optimal health environment for both users and employees.

This success story attracted other actors to resume other private and public activities.

London temporary schemes response to Coronavirus

Transport for London and London's Boroughs worked closely to deliver a rapid response to the pandemic, with a programme of temporary cycle routes, low traffic neighbourhoods, school streets and social distancing interventions to provide space for social distancing and enable more walking and cycling. Not without opposition, public opinion surveys show good majority support for the approach. A second phase is now allowing time for stronger engagement and the gathering of data on results, which will help guide decisions around which schemes might be kept permanently, and how to invest effectively in the future. Early monitoring shows promising results.

Improving bus driver protection from COVID-19 transmission

The COVID-19 pandemic tragically saw London bus driver deaths in early 2020. A TfL, UCL and TRL collaboration demonstrated a rapid response using simulations, stakeholder engagement, bus specifications and driver guidance. Simulation research showed air ingress into the cabin from the bus saloon is reduced by 99% if the assault screen was adapted to seal gaps, and was implemented across the 9000+ London buses. This was combined with modification to Heating, Ventilation and Air Circulation (HVAC) systems on 1800 buses, and guidance for cleaning and driver practices. The team’s agile response provided reassurance and better protection for bus drivers.
