Exceptional Savings on an Exceptional Bridge

The £1.5bn A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon scheme was Highways England’s largest road in construction and was delivered by the A14 Integrated Delivery Team (IDT), a JV of contractors Costain, Skanska & Balfour Beatty & designers Atkins/Jacobs.

Together the team set out to deliver much more than just the road infrastructure. They pushed the boundaries of collaboration, engineering and community benefits to leave a wider lasting legacy, overcoming engineering and covid challenges to open the new 21 miles of A14 to 70mph 8 months earlier than planned & on budget.

Pooley New Bridge

Pooley Bridge (town) is the North-Eastern gate into the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a uniquely beautiful landscape. The original Pooley Bridge was a Grade II listed 3-span stone arch, built in 1764, washed away by the floods caused by Storm Desmond in 2015. The Pooley new Bridge is a unique and exceptionally slender 40mspan open-spandrel arch with an innovative composite stainless-steel and high-strength concrete structure, becoming a fitting addition to the site thanks to its lightness and transparency, not only providing unhindered views but minimising obstruction to water in future flood events.

Preston Western Distributor Road

The Preston Western Distributor Road scheme has demonstrated that during the design stage close collaboration between Contractor and Designer allowing buildability reviews can enable/unlock huge savings in carbon for civil engineering projects and that the biggest savings are within the embodied carbon. However, the initiatives utilised by Costain Ltd during the construction of the project demonstrates that a willingness to use new technology and the knowledge of supply chain allows significant savings to be made in the construction phase.
