Almost every city in the world has an environmental noise policy. It may come as some surprise that almost every city in the world already exceeds their own environmental noise policy. After almost 5 decades of experimentation, concern and, in some countries, genuine hard work on road noise control, it is now a fact that we will never achieve quiet cities like there were when we were surrounded by farms and our mode of transport consisted of four legs and a saddle…or can we?
Current road surface technologies and the continuing drive towards reducing fossil fuels and towards electric cars enable cities to improve noise by up to 25 percent.
The presentation illustrates why we have road traffic noise, where it begins and why it’s so difficult to control. It will also include some of the speaker's global contributions in this domain and offers insight, ideas and thoughts on what is currently being done in Qatar and beyond.

Gerald Stewart is the global lead of acoustics for Inhabit group (an Egis company) based in Dubai, UAE. With a background in live and recorded sound production, Gerald brings a well-rounded, practical perspective to noise and vibration control, electro – acoustic and audio visual design, from commercial and residential and industrial buildings to opera houses, theatres and performance space planning, and construction supervision. His work has seen him collaborating with architects and builders alike, on a variety of iconic global projects.
Gerald holds a MDesSc from Sydney University with over 40 years of experience in the Acoustic and Audio industry. He was the founding chairman and Fellow of the Middle East Acoustic society, a collection of the regions 200 professional acousticians and is also committed to teaching through the Institute of Acoustics (IoA) as a part of the global reach program.
