Overview

Delegates will hear about how technology can greatly enhance how society perceives and uses our transportation network.

The final output will aim to identify the immediate problems that the transportation sector is facing and identify how AI and data analytics can solve them. We hope to answer three key questions:

• What outcomes are the industry aiming for and are we doing the right things to get there?  
• What metrics do we use to measure successful AI/data analytics and are we achieving them? 
• Are we developing the right skills to deliver transport technology goals?

Jon Parker, Director of Transport Planning at ITP, Director Advisory Group, Mobility and Infrastructure at Royal HaskoningDHV, Visiting Research Fellow, UWE, Centre for Transport and Society and Chair of the CIHT AI Task and Finish Group 

Presenting on the progress of CIHT's AI Task and Finish Group

Jon is one of the UK’s leading sustainable transport planners, and the 2015 ‘smarter travel professional of the year’. He has 30 years’ experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of transport strategies, policies and programmes, spanning the public and private sector. He has particular expertise in planning for sustainable development, public transport, travel behaviour change, and consensus-led transport strategy development.

He is an elected Council Member and Fellow of CIHT, and Visiting Research Fellow at UWE, in addition to his day-job overseeing two of the UK’s leading transport planning practices (ITP and Royal HaskoningDHV). His team have won many awards for their work including the CIHT Sustainable Transport Award in 2013, 2014 and 2017.

Dr Jonathan Bright, Head of AI for Public Services and Head of Online Safety at The Alan Turing Institute

Presenting on The Opportunities and Challenges for AI Adoption in Local Government

Dr Jonathan Bright is a Fellow at the Turing Institute, where he leads teams researching the use of AI for Public Services and understanding Online Safety. Before joining the Turing he was an Associate Professor at the Oxford Internet Institute. He is a widely published author in the area of government digitialisation, artificial intelligence and online harms and safety. He is a former editor of the journal Policy & Internet.

Tamara Bozovic PhD MSc, Research Fellow in Transport Analysis at University of the West of England  (UWE Bristol)

Presenting on the benefits of utilising machine learning in research and the potential applications of machine learning for transport planning.

Tamara’s PhD examined walkability and provided practical insights into prioritization of the retrofit of urban environments.  It provided a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underpinning the complexity of urban systems and human decisions.  Her areas of expertise cover walkability, transport planning, transport systems, integration between transport systems and urban form.

Since 2004, Tamara has been working on solutions encouraging modal shift and delivering better outcomes.  Working on projects in Switzerland, Argentina and New Zealand, her roles involved decision support on master-plans development, local assessment and retrofit.

Format

Delegates will be given an update on the work completed to date.  They will also hear presentations on research and other work being done on how AI is being used within transport.
