Join us for the CIHT North West Annual General Meeting 2022. You will also have the chance to hear from Melissa Giusti, Innovation Manager, National Highways. Mel will be discussing the Off-slip GLOSA project: Green Light Optimised Speed Advisory trial on NH network.
The GLOSA, green light optimised speed advisory, system alerts drivers of an upcoming traffic light and advice on the optimal speed to avoid abrupt accelerations/decelerations, saving fuel, money and emissions.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that CIHT North West will hold it's Annual General Meeting at 17:15 on Tuesday 24 May 2022 online.
The CIHT North West AGM will be held online this year. We invite all voting members in CIHT North West to join us.
The meeting will begin with a presentation from Melissa Giusti, Innovation Manager, National Highways, on the trial of the GLOSA, green light optimised speed advisory, system (see further details below).
The AGM will see the region’s Chair reflect on their term in office and the successes of CIHT North West in contributing to the transport profession and CIHT’s national activities. The AGM will see the election of new committee members to take forward the region's plans for the next year.
If you would like to put yourself forward for a role or would just like to find out more about being part of the committee, please contact us at: regions@ciht.org.uk
The AGM is open to all voting members of CIHT (Fellows; Full Members; Associate Members; Graduate Members; Apprentice Members; and Part-time Student Members).
The presentation will be of particular interest to with an interest in traffic lights operations, especially at the interface between the local authority and strategic road networks, connected autonomous vehicles and carbon reduction in the transport sector.

Melissa Giusti, Innovation Manager, National Highways, will present on the Off-slip GLOSA project: Green Light Optimised Speed Advisory trial on NH network.
What is GLOSA?
GLOSA stands for Green Light Optimised Speed Advisory. The GLOSA application provides timely and accurate information about traffic lights cycles and traffic lights position information through infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) communication, and provides drivers with speed advice guiding them with a more constant speed and with less stopping time through traffic lights. (Katsaros, Kernchen, Dianati, & Rieck, 2011).
GLOSA is a connected vehicle technology, that collects timing of traffic lights from junctions and delivers to a presentation device in-vehicle (mobile app, vehicle infotainment display, etc). It uses voice announcements to minimise driver distraction and presents it as optimal speed to approach the next junction to get through safely on a green light. It also provides countdown to green whilst waiting at a junction. The technology is able to smooth out stop/starts, acceleration and braking; ¬¬¬thus reducing emissions.
GLOSA trial on NH Network
The Off-slip GLOSA trial tested the service on inclined off-slips at signalised motorway Junction.
The project delivered real-time communication between the infrastructure (traffic light) and the vehicle (mobile phone app) in addition to a tool to smooth traffic and enhance operations at the interface between the National Highways and Transport for Greater Manchester Local Authority networks.
The analysis performed on the measurements of the tailpipe emissions came back with encouraging figures.
We welcome applications to become a committee member from across all membership grades and from all backgrounds within the transportation sector. Nominations are welcomed from Local Authorities, consultancies, student and apprentice members.
Members from all parts of the North West are encouraged to put themselves forward for nomination as we look to cover as-wide-an-area as possible.
If you would like to put yourself forward for a role or would just like to find out more about being part of the committee, please contact us at: regions@ciht.org.uk
