This CIHT Monthly Masterclass will be discussing how we can make travelling on public transport, and spaces such as stations and bus stops, safe and secure for women and girls.
When compared to men, women are more likely to feel unsafe while using public transport. This topic will be covered from different angles, including from a consulting/research background and the British Transport Police (BTP), and will discuss the steps that are needed to make sure public transport networks are safe – everything from designing a space to personal behaviour.
An important discussion, this webinar is open to both CIHT Members and non-members to attend free of charge. This webinar will be of particular interest to transport planners, designers, and engineers wanting to produce safer spaces for all.
Synopsis: In this session, Susan will provide an overview of her award-winning study titled “A study on women’s personal safety in public transport in London”. She heard from over 600 women across London who shared their experiences first hand. Susan presented her findings and a series of interventions to TfL in May 2021, and TfL have since implemented a marketing campaign around sexual harassment on the transport network. Susan’s presentation will cover:
Biography: Susan is a Senior Consultant within the Liveable Places team at WSP, with seven years’ experience. She is well versed in public realm studies and active travel schemes, with extensive experience in stakeholder engagement and consultation. Susan is passionate about improving safety within the built environment and is a qualified Road Safety Auditor; she has a particular interest in women’s safety.

Synopsis: Tackling violence and intimidation against women and girls is a key strategic priority for the British Transport Police (BTP). This presentation will outline how BTP works together with partner organisations to target offenders and preventing offences of rape, sexual offences, domestic abuse, stalking, ‘honour’-based abuse and all forms of sexual harassment on the rail network. The presentation will provide an overview of Police tactics & tools and, also explain how attendees can support these aims from both a public and professional perspective.
Biography: Sam Painter has worked for the British Transport Police (BTP), primarily as a Detective, for over 14 years. He has led various investigation teams across a variety of crime types including Robbery, Sexual Offences, Intelligence and has also been seconded to the National County Lines Coordinator Centre.
In April 2022 Sam became the Force Sexual Offences/VIAWG Strategy & Implementation lead with responsibility for overseeing BTP’s response to violence against women and girls. Sam works closely with partners from a variety of sectors to ensure the Rail Network is a hostile environment for offenders and that victims of crime are appropriately supported. BTP have recently launched the free Railway Guardian app which helps remove barriers to reporting and provides information on what to do if you see sexual harassment on trains or at stations.
Synopsis: Jo’s presentation will highlight initiatives underway by Women in Transport members and partners to identify the issues at hand and recommendations for work that needs to take place to make the transport network safer for everyone. The presentation will include top tips and take away points for the audience.
Biography: Jo is the President of Women in Transport, a not-for-profit organisation empowering women in the transport industry to maximise their potential. Jo is especially passionate about addressing women’s under-representation in the transport sector and has been a Board member of Women in Transport since 2015. Jo led the industry body’s engagement with parliamentarians to set up the first ever All-Party Parliamentary Group for Women in Transport in 2016. In the same year, Jo was named everywoman in Transport & Logistics Industry Champion for her work attracting and retaining women and inspiring young people to choose transport careers.
Aside from her voluntary work with Women in Transport, Jo is the Founder and Chief Executive of JFG Communications, a consultancy specialising in stakeholder engagement, political communications, diversity and decarbonisation for the transport sector.
Named among the 100 most influential women in Westminster and the top ten most inspirational women in public affairs, Jo has almost 20 years of experience in helping companies engage their stakeholders, build advocacy for their plans, and inform and influence public policy.
Before founding JFG Communications, Jo spent almost a decade at Transport for London where she built and led the company’s award-winning stakeholder engagement team, building stakeholder support and advocacy for London’s transport infrastructure and the funding to deliver it.
