CIHT will host the 6th and final webinar in our 2023 headline webinar series on 16 November 2023 at 13:00-14:00.
The webinar will be hosted on a virtual event platform and will see a set of presentations from three experts within the industry who will present on the topic of road safety.
There will be a Q&A session towards the end of the webinar where the audience can ask the speakers their questions.
This webinar is free for all CIHT Members to attend and is charged for CIHT Partner Employees and non-members.
To protect lives and reduce accidents Road Safety education from a very young age is fundamental. All road users should be aware of their surroundings and make sure their behaviour enables all forms of travel to safely take place.
While improving road safety comes from a wide range of measures, including road design, setting the correct speed limits and immediately responding to accidents, raising awareness of the rules and risks can reduce dangerous behaviours and protect those who are most vulnerable.
In this webinar we will be looking at the different ways in which Road Safety education can take form: from school- based programs to public awareness campaign and drivers’ education. We will focus particularly on the protection of vulnerable road users and hear positive examples of successful behavioural change initiatives.

Syed Yaseen Afshad, CIHT Technical Champion
Syed is a highly experienced Traffic & Transportation Engineer with over 6 years of experience in the field. He has worked on a wide range of projects in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, including traffic engineering, transport planning, modelling, and road safety. He was an integral team member in the traffic engineering and crowd modelling studies for two of the eight FIFA World Cup 2022 stadiums in Qatar.
Syed is passionate about road safety and is committed to making roads safer for everyone. He is a strong advocate for the use of evidence-based approaches to road safety and is always looking for new ways to improve road safety outcomes.
Syed is currently working as Traffic Engineering Specialist for a Program Management office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for a mega project in the Kingdom. He is in responsible of heading a team of engineers in the development of a new mobility and safe accessibility strategy for all road users, as well as a road safety strategy for the city.
Nicola Wass, CEO of So-Mo
In 2012 Nicola founded So-Mo, a Behavioural Science consultancy which aims to help people make different choices and build better habits. Collectively, these small changes have achieved a big impact. Over the years Nicola has helped 100s of organisations improve the health, safety, and happiness of the populations they serve and the people they employ.
A regular contributor to the media, Nicola has appeared on: BBC News with Victoria Derbyshire, Good Morning Britain, Radio 4, Times Radio, The One Show, The Times and The Telegraph to name a few. However, she is always happiest on a conference stage or in a workshop, where there is real opportunity to bring the Behavioural Sciences to life, and hear others talk about their aims, ideas and aspirations for change.
Lawrence Chauke, PIARC-World Road Association
Lawrence is a Registered Civil Engineer with over 26 years of experience in the Civil Engineering industry. Currently employed by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (A State-Owned Company) as a Project Manager, and responsible for the implementation of Construction Projects, and also a Regional Member of the Road Safety Focus Group.
He is also a corresponding Member of the PIARC Road Safety Committee (TC 3.1) and part of the PIARC Road Safety Knowledge Exchange Initiative.
