Overview

This webinar, organised by CIHT Yorkshire & the Humber, will look at how York became the first city in the UK to use a real-time transport model for live traffic management and the benefits it delivered in highway improvement savings.

Hear about the innovative suite of transport modelling tools implemented at the City of York as part of its Smarter Travel Evolution Programme.

This suite includes a first-of-its-kind combined planning and operational toolkit; bringing together the City’s transport planning and traffic management capability by implementing a digital twin of the road network combining transport modelling with live data feeds.

The webinar will include an explanation of how the new tools are providing benefits to the City of York, including how the system has been implemented; theoretical background/concepts; the technology used; challenges faced; and advice to other Local Authorities who are interested in similar capabilities in future.

It will be of particular interest to transport modellers/ planners/ traffic managers/ network monitoring officers/ traffic engineers/ practitioners/ advisors at any stage in their job level as well as highway authorities wishing to deploy real-time modelling.

Speaker

Bipin Muley, Senior Transport Planner, Wood Group UK Limited

Bipin is a post-graduate Civil Engineer (Transportation Engineering) with over 6 years of experience in strategic transport modelling and economic appraisal of transport schemes predominantly for the UK market.

He specialises in the development of DfT’s TAG complaint strategic transport models, variable demand models, traffic forecasting and economic assessment of transport schemes. He has also carried out social and distribution impact assessment for multiple transport schemes.

He has worked on some of the major infrastructure projects in the UK including but not limited to Heathrow Airport Expansion Project, Smarter Travel Evolution Programme (STEP), Testing the impact of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) on South East Regional Transport Model (SERTM).

Bipin Muley

Michael Oliver, Technical Director, PTV Group

Michael is technical director for PTV in the UK. He leads a team of modelling experts who support UK clients with innovation and application of PTV software. Michael has a background in multimodal strategic assignment and demand modelling, working as a transport modelling consultant for Mott MacDonald, before joining PTV.

More recently, he was PTV’s project manager for the implementation of the City of York’s real-time transport model, and project director for an OFGEM funded research project which applied activity-based demand modelling to forecast future energy demand for electric vehicle charging scenarios. Currently, Mike is PTV’s project director for the implementation of real-time modelling within the National Traffic Information Service.
