Deepak Kaphle

Chair

Deepak, a BEng and MSc degree graduate, is a Traffic and Safety Engineer with over 25 years of experience. Deepak is very interested in improving safety of the vulnerable road users. With experience in both the private and public sector, he currently works as a Senior Engineer in the Planning and Development Team at National Highways.

An advocate of Safe System Approach, he is also a mentor for early career professionals.

Deepak gets involved in a variety of Traffic, Congestion Relief, Road Safety Improvements, Environment & Wellbeing, and Users & Communities projects under Designated Funds portfolio either as a Designer, Project Manager or Road Safety Auditor.

A member of CIHT and SoRSA, he joined the CIHT South East Region Committee in 2018, becoming Chair in 2023.

Kerry Bangle 

Senior Vice Chair 

Kerry, BA(hons) MSc(eng), is WSP’s Director for Transport Planning with 25 years’ experience in a wide variety of transport, advisory and major project roles in the UK and Australia. Kerry is particularly passionate about bringing forward the next generation of professionals, particularly women, to work in this dynamic and critical industry.

 

In particular, transport has a key role to play in addressing our Net Zero challenges so ensuring we have the right people and talent has never been more important.

Kerry particularly enjoys dealing with the challenge of high-profile infrastructure projects in complex and politically-charged environments as demonstrated through her senior roles on HS2, Crossrail, airport expansion projects, the expansion of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone and is currently Consultant Programme Director for Cambridge’s ambitious road user charging scheme. Kerry is a STEM ambassador and a mentor for several WSP early career professionals.

Steve Hellyer

Junior Vice Chair

Steve is a Civil Engineer with 15 years’ experience specialising in Highways Design. He is a Highways Team leader for Kier Highways Design Solutions (KHDS).

Steve is currently involved in A66 Northern Trans Pennine Upgrade Scheme, leading the Highways design for Scheme 01 covering M6 Junction 40 and the Pavement design for Scheme 02 covering Kemplay Bank Roundabout in Penrith, Cumbria.

Steve has experience working on HS2 and for Area 3 and 4 National Highways maintenance contracts. He has also worked for several Local Highway Authorities which is where he started his career.

Katerina Georgiou

Honorary Secretary

Katerina is a Senior Highways Engineer at Project Centre Ltd. A BSc and MSc Graduate in Civil Engineering; Katerina has 7+ years of experience within the industry, which has mainly focused on highway maintenance and highway redevelopment. 

She gained her IEng status in October 2018 with the CIHT and is now working towards CEng.

Katerina has served in the role of the CIHT Young Professional Representative for the South East Region in England between 2020-2022. She has recently taken up the Secretary role with the committee for the 2023-2024 term.

Katerina started working for Amey Consulting as a Graduate Engineer and a member of the Roads Maintenance Design team, on the 4th Generation South East Scottish Tunk Road Unit contract (Transport Scotland). After the completion of the 2-year graduate scheme she was promoted to Assistant Engineer and became a team leader, managing a team of Apprentices, Technicians and Graduate Engineers. She was then promoted to Engineer following the acquisition of the IEng status. She then has worked on projects for the maintenance of the trunk road network (Areas 10, 13 and 14) on behalf of Highways England. She was also seconded to Amey’s Aviation Infrastructure team between January to May 2020. She worked on civil and military airport projects, carrying out safeguarding, planning and civil designs to accommodate the airports’ needs.

Katerina has moved to Project Centre Ltd in 2021 and since then she has been working on town regeneration and maintenance projects for various local authorities in the South East and South West of England. Her work has focused on the development of public realm projects and upgrading of urban spaces where people want to live and enjoy. Important part of this work is promoting active travel and safety for the road users.

Izzy Wallis 

Honorary Treasurer

Izzy has achieved both a Foundation & BA Hons degree in Graphic Media at the University for the Creative Arts, which gave her a great foundation in product design, animation & illustration.

 

Her previous career was within the education sector for 5 years as a Specialist Teaching Assistant, but she wanted a new adventure which is how she came into her current position studying a BTEC Level 3 in Construction & The Built Environment alongside working as an Apprentice Civil Engineer Technician for National Highways.

Recently she has been given the opportunity as the new treasurer for the SE region CIHT Committee which she is thoroughly enjoying!

Adnan Zameer 

Emerging Professionals Chair

Adnan is an experienced civil infrastructure engineer and has played a leading role in delivering improvements to the UK's strategic road network and local road network. He is currently working for Arup’s infrastructure team in the UK. 

He moved to the United Kingdom after finishing his M.Eng. from New Zealand and has been awarded the Distinguished Graduate Award 2022 for his exceptional work in the fields of carbon sequestration, sustainable infrastructure development, and integrated blue-green infrastructure. He has a budding interest in reducing embodied carbon from infrastructure, especially highways.


Adnan is a member of CIHT and previously served as a council member in 2021 before joining the regional committee in 2023. He has represented the CIHT Diversity and Inclusion Panel under the council and worked on the preparation of the EDI strategy and "Shifting the Dial" action plan.

Adnan started as a graduate engineer with WSP for the Highways UK team and was later promoted to engineer within development infrastructure, delivering both private and public sector clients within the UK. He is currently undertaking projects including Goodwood Estate Regeneration and West Slope Residencies for the University of Sussex within Arup Infrastructure and managing a team of graduate engineers, apprentices, and technicians. Adnan enjoys collaborative work with diverse teams and has the technical ability and pragmatism to lead challenging projects.

Graham Pointer

Events co-ordinator

Graham, BSc(Hons) in Applied Economic Geography FCIHT CGeog FRGS MPIA, is WSP’s Director of Policy with over 20 years’ experience in integrated transport and land use planning.

Graham is passionate about improving how mobility and places - big and small - work for people.

Deborah Sims

Committee Adviser

A Chartered Engineer with over 25 years’ experience in road safety engineering, highway design, asset management and maintenance. Deborah is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering at the University of Greenwich at Medway. 

Her teaching includes Project Management & Appraisal, Engineering Professional Skills, Construction Management & Technology, and Highway Engineering.

She is the Programme Leader for the Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship, Engineering Employability Champion, Placements Officer, and a member of the Civil Engineering Industrial Advisory Board. Deborah is a STEM Ambassador and chaired the Careers Guidance Steering Group for the CIHT, developing materials for use in schools and colleges to encourage young people to consider careers in the built environment. Deborah is a Professional Reviewer and Mentor, having reviewed over 80 CEng and IEng candidates. She is a Trustee of Chatham Maritime Trust and of CIHT.
